Make it a Priority
Widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world, becoming an IRONMAN is something I’ve always dreamt of. After months of thinking about it, I finally signed up for an IRONMAN 70.3 — a long-distance triathlon consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and a 13.1-mile run.
Over the past 5 weeks, I’ve spent countless hours swimming, biking, and running to get my body (and mind) in shape to tackle this race. While training, I got the news that my grandmother is in bad shape and is nearing the end.
As such, I decided to head home to be with my family for a couple of weeks. While obviously not priority #1, I made sure to limit any significant interruptions in my training. Before I flew home, I made all the necessary arrangements to still be able to swim, bike, and run, as I would have at home.
While I wouldn’t be able to open-water swim as I’m used to, I talked with friends and family to see what pools were open in the area. Eventually, I was able to lock in availability at my buddies’ country club, which fortunately allows members to bring guests.
I then started researching methods to ship my bike — which proved to be too expensive. I looked into renting for a couple of weeks, but due to Coronavirus, bike shops had temporarily stopped this service. As a last resort, I reached out to people in the area to see if anyone had a bike I could borrow while visiting. My Uncle was able to connect me with his friend, who happened to have the exact size road bike I ride at home.
Last but not least, I made sure to bring all my necessary running gear. Fortunately, finding a place to train wasn’t an issue, as the roads surrounding my parent’s house a great.
In addition to my pre-travel preparations, I also checked a bag so I could bring all my training essentials. Things like cycling shoes and shorts, jerseys, bike helmet, bike repair kit, etc. I also packed my jammers (swimsuit), goggles, and swim cap and made sure I had my running essentials such as my shoes, sunglasses, hat, heart rate monitor, and watch.
What This Means For You
My extreme amount of preparation might sound a little psychotic. I get it. But this race is important to me. It’s a priority in my life — so I took the time to ensure there wouldn’t be any interruption in my training.
I’m not saying all this to brag, or boast, but instead to shed light on what’s needed in order to live healthier.
Getting in better shape has to be a priority in your life. You have to decide what’s important to you, and then take action accordingly.
If your health is important, you need must plan, prepare, and prioritize to ensure you are eating healthy, staying active, and taking the necessary action.
It is not always going to be easy or comfortable to squeeze a workout in. Or skip that fast food. Or stay consistent. But when health is important to you, when it’s a priority in your life, you can easily understand how each decision impacts your overall health.
Health needs to be a priority, not a want, desire, or something that would be ‘nice to have’.
It isn’t always going to be easy. You’ll undoubtedly have to work through some uncomfortable and difficult circumstances. But in making your health a priority, you’ll more easily get through the adversity and achieve your goals.
